Hail! Hail! The new NLC Champion is crowned

And it came to pass.

With 8 players, 11 games, 12 months, (6 questionable combinations and 3 outright blunders) the 2017 Gladstone Trophy competition ended on 31 August.

Two late games were played as players scrambled for position in the dying weeks.

First we had Mister Hamme versus Mister Osserian.

The final game played in the competition was Mister Widdicombe versus Mister Edwards.

Then the guns fell silent and the soldiers emerged bloodies but unbroken to determine who had won the war.

Here are the final standings for the 2017 Gladstone Trophy:

  1. Doctor Kirby  – 4.5 points from 5 games (Champion)
  2. Mister Widdicombe – 3.5 from 5
  3. Mister Osserian – 1 from 4
  4. Mister Hamme – 1 from 3
  5. Mister Whitely – 1 from 1
  6. Mister Edwards – 0 from 2 (joint 6th with Doctor Shady)
  7. Doctor Schady – 0 from 2 (joint 6th with Mister Edwards)
  8. Mister Trivedi – 0 from 0

The full crosstable is here.

And with hearty congratulations the NLC Chess Circle awards the title of ‘NLC 2017 Chess Champion’ to Doctor Kirby. Well deserved.

Churchill looks on with envy knowing he would never achieve such heights

But as is long-standing NLC Chess Circle tradition, there’s no chess without dinner and booze. On 05 September the players met for the End of Season Trophy Presentation Dinner.

A cup in both hands make Doctor Kirby a happy boy.
