NLC lost a close-fought match against our friends from the Reform 1.5 – 3.5. It was likely many of our matches this season. The NLC had quite a few chances, but were ground down by good opponents.
But this was a friendly, and as always we were ably led by Mister Trivedi. A pleasant evening all round.
The good news was that Mister Whiteley managed to win his match on Board 5. May it be the first of many – we need them!
Eschewing his usual caution, Doctor Kirby got into a helter-skelter match against Richard Hall. Perhaps a bit more caution in the middle game would have been useful as his canny opponent broke through on the Queenside late on.
Doctor Schady drew. Doctor Schady was a pawn down but put up a stubborn defence and used his time advantage to secure the draw.
Mister Osseiran lost a tactical match against Teddy Bourne. Despite being material down he had a good Kingside attack and made his opponent work for the win. Mister Whiteley won his first game against our friend Anne Abel-Smith, organiser of the Reform’s social chess events.
And so to dinner and good conversation. Being 1st March there was a Welsh theme for St David’s Day
