A night of firsts

A quick report this week as the entire reporting staff have been tied up on other matters. So here’s what happened last week, rapidly hammered out on the typewriter in sixty seconds flat.

The headline is that it was an evening of firsts.

A first for Mister ‘blo9981’ Bitty who took two full points for the first time (at least as far as this journal’s archivist can make out; Mister Bitty may wish to correspond with the Letters Editor if this is incorrect).

And a first for Mister ‘cstevep’ Phillips, our friend from the Lansdowne, who went on a berserker-worthy streak of endless wins to secure the top spot on the podium. No stopping him that night.

Games of the week

Each week, this journal’s Editorial Committee will present to the Chess Circle two online games from that week’s session that, in their esteemed view, display a particularly lively charm. Perhaps it will be a ferocious attack, or a dogged defence, maybe a catastrophic blunder or simply something that piques the Committee’s interest…

Mister ‘blo9981’ Bitty is a NLC online chess stalwart. He always turns up, and always valiantly bashes away. In previous weeks he’s held a few of the bigger fishes to draws, and so it wasn’t long before he started notching up some victories. Here’s Mister Bitty taking a (not so big) fish for the full point.

And for the second game, as is (sort of) tradition, the winner gets a moment of glory. So here’s Mister ‘cstevep’ Phillips getting the better of the usual Wednesday night victor.

Wednesday 10 June sees us play in a Swiss format. See you all then.

  1. Dear Letters Editor,

I am afraid I must correct your latest report on last week’s proceedings as it may influence the gambling markets for tonight’s matches. Whilst it has become customary for me support the whole weight of the competitors from below. I did in fact record a maiden win at the begining of the COVID crisis – I am not sure who was the more surprised – my graceful opponent or me.

Looking forward to another good evening’s Chess and your ever entertaining reports.

    Kind regards

    Blo9981

    1. Dear Mister ‘Blo9981’ Bitty,

You are quite right; this journal has fallen into error. The Editorial Committee sends its sincere apologies.

You achieved a brace of victories on two evenings – June 3rd as reported, and also April 8th, as you suggest. You triumphed over Mister ‘rahul_ldn’ Sinha and Miss ‘Leegunner1’ Widger.

This Journal takes its reputation as the Paper of Record for Liberal Chess very seriously indeed. Rest assured, the errant archivist was summoned to the Editor’s office and promptly sacked. (His appeals on behalf of his six young children and infirm mother fell on deaf ears, for we know the local workhouses are not yet full).

      Sincerely,

      The Editorial Committee.
