Giffin pipped

Another exciting week of online Lib chess action. Plenty of games, plenty of blunders, plenty of fun.

This week it looked like Mister ‘GiffinNLC’ Giffin QC MA (Oxon) was all set to grab the gold medal for the evening as he was well out in front with just a couple of games to go. But with Mister Widdicombe losing to Mister ‘Ndi78’ Iounnou the gap was narrowed, and the unlucky Mister ‘GiffinNLC’ Giffin QC MA (Oxon) was pipped to the post in the final game by Mister ‘Ndi78’ Iounnou.

That’s two outright victories for Mister Iounnou, who is adding pedigree to his evident skill.

But enough of the Editorial Committee’s chit chat and flim flammery. This week, the chess will be left to do the talking. Here are this week’s twosome.

Games of the week

Each week, this journal’s Editorial Committee will present to the Chess Circle two online games from that week’s session that, in their esteemed view, display a particularly lively charm. Perhaps it will be a ferocious attack, or a dogged defence, maybe a catastrophic blunder or simply something that piques the Committee’s interest…

The first game of the week was chosen not for any particular demonstration of chess skill (it was early on and both players were still just warming up…), but rather because it with that most picturesque of endings – a smothered mate.

Our second game is a heavyweight bout – the current NLC Champ vs the 22 April Clean Sweep victor. Captain ‘Hardicanute’ Chamberlain has had mixed results over the last few weeks, but here we see him brandish his typical positional style to overcome the evening’s eventual winner Mister ‘Ndi78’ Iounnou in style.

See you next Wednesday, 06 May, 7pm.
