Telegram just in: Ath beat NLC

Subscribers to this journal will know that the Editorial Committee has an unwavering commitment to reporting on all matters connected to the NLC Chess Circle. It is this steadfast determination to bring up-to-date and accurate news to our readership that has led this organ to become known as the Journal of Record for Liberal chess.

For most matches and associated chess events we send a full staff reporter along with a technician proficient in operating those new ‘photographic’ reproduction devices. Thus our readership get a full and entertaining report. For some matches we are unable to provide a full service, and so rely upon field correspondents. Occasionally things get very stretched and we sadly have to resort to sending the office boy.

For the recent Athenaeum versus NLC friendly we were not even able to send the office boy, on account of the Committee having to fire him for the quality of his last report.

But our resolute pledge to provide coverage of all matches led us to request that Mister Borgoyne, captain for the evening, send us a telegram with the details of the match. The office received the following telegram yesterday evening, which we reproduce in full for the benefit of our readership:

To the Editorial Committee STOP Athenaeum v NLC friendly Wednesday 22 May STOP A very enjoyable evening and a closely fought match with some long battles STOP Athenaeum emerged victorious 3-2 STOP A lithograph of our team to follow STOP No lithograph of the excellent Cotes de Rhône unfortunately STOP All best Burgoyne STOP

The office took delivery of the following lithograph just this morning.

The Editorial Committee wishes to thank Mister Burgoyne for his telegrammed report, and to express our congratulations on captaining the NLC team (which we believe to be a first for him). We are heartened, too, to see the welcome return of Mister Jiang, who we have not seen in play for some time, and the second match for Mister Harsh. Ms Hu and Mister Barnett are, by now, considered solid regulars, of course.
