The Libs go swinging

Despair.

First, there was ‘chessboxing‘.

Then there was ‘go karting‘.

Now – with a heavy heart and much sombre reflection – the Editorial Committee must inform our readers that there has been another sorry episode.

We present to you this cinefilm footage – if you can bear it – of the latest sad affair in the slow decline of NLC Chess.

Our fieldsports correspondent, whilst choking back the tears of mourning shed for the NLC Chess Circle’s self respect, filed the following report from the scene:

The committee has become increasingly alarmed as younger members have gravitated towards new fangled fads in recent times. They were therefore most relieved when it was announced that the latest outing would be the gentlemanly pursuit of golf. Fine upstanding members would be walking the fairways with their trusty clubs, pitting their wits against what nature had to throw at them.

There was some childish sniggering at the back of the room when the name of the establishment was revealed to be “Swingers”. Thankfully when the group arrived at the venue in Oxford Circus, most of the other patrons had their clothes on, even though some were defying the chilly evening in the name of “fashion”. Libbers, however, were properly attired: in plus fours and breaches!

As the Libs were directed to the “Helter Skelter” course there was a sense of foreboding like something ominous may be linked to it. This proved unfounded, however, and they felt like one big happy family.

The group teed off at 5 minute intervals and much fun and hilarity was had by all. There was particular amusement as participants struggled with the windmills, loop the loops and of course the Helter Skelter finale.

In a sense, all those who attended were winners. More accurately, however, Mister Ioannou mastered the course to win. On the final hole, he got a hole in one and was awarded a golden ball, resulting in a final score of 24.

The Libbers then retired to the 19th hole to quench the thirst built up over their arduous  match play and plan the next outing.

The Editorial Committee will be raising these goings on with the Club Chairman. Enough is enough, it is unseemly for a chess team to get up to such nonsense. Something must be done.
