Mister Chamberlain made his Gladstone Trophy debut in a game against Mister Widdicombe – played, somewhat unsually, (but not altogether unpleasantly…) at the social chess evening at the Reform Club.
The position was about even until Mister Widdicombe lost a pawn after an inaccurate 18.Qf4, and then finding himself being drawn into time trouble (what else?) he lashed out with an ill-advised 22.Nxd5 sacrifice. Mister Chamberlain responded to these moves in the manner they deserved, and of course went on to win.
Well done Mister Chamberlain, who currently leads the standings jointly with Mister Giffin QC.
