Gladstone’s been busy

The summer months might make one think of long evenings, G&Ts on the terrace, strawberries and cream and Wimbledon…but for the NLC Chess Circle, summer months mean only one thing: Gladstone Trophy games.

Here are three recent encounters.

First off, Mister Widdicombe v Doctor Kirby. Mister Widdicombe expected the Caro-Kann, and managed to not to trip up against the resident Caro expert. But quality always shows, and the Doctor grabbed a pawn in the middle game and quickly offered a draw. Whilst there was plenty of play left in the position, it would have been an uphill struggle for Mister Widdicombe to salvage even half point, so a draw was agreed.

The NLC’s Most Improved Player continued his impressive progress. Mister Osserian fought Mister Widdicombe to a level position well into the middle game, before getting tied up on the back rank, to the relief of Mister Widdicombe. Future opponents of Mister Osserian should watch out…

Good chess from Mister Osserian

The final game saw Doctor Kirby take on Mister Hamme. They went toe-to-toe until the Doctor broke through on the queenside. With the heavy pieces pouring through the breach, Mister Hamme saw what was coming, and offered his hand.

Doctor Kirby eyeing the queenside…
Solid stuff from Mister Hamme…but not enough in the end

Remember – get your games played, and send Mister Widdicombe your scoresheets!
