Permission to Lans(downe)

It’s been coming for a while. After close matches and the draw against Roehampton, the NLC was due a win.

The match was away against our good friends the Lansdowne Club who supply players for the NLC Hamilton Russell Cup team. It was the friendliest of friendlies.

But perhaps there was something in the air. Maybe there was something in the water. In fact there was nothing in the water. Before and during the match all four NLC warriors were sipping on the H2O. This should have warned the Lansdowne that the NLC meant business.

For once the stars aligned and the NLC cruised to a 4-0 victory. There followed an excellent dinner in the Lansdowne’s revamped art deco restaurant.

Doctor Kirby beat our good friend Mister Taylor on board 1. Mister Taylor didn’t start well and lost the exchange on move 12. Doctor Kirby controlled the game and broke through at the end.

On Board 2 Mister Widdicombe ground down our good friend Miss Seiben in a Four Knights game as Black.

Mister Widdicombe missed 17…Nh3 for a neater finish but should be happy with the win.

In the battle of the captains on Board 3, Mister Trivedi used his trademark King’s Gambit to end a quick game against Justin Chilton.

On Board 4 Mister Hamme made it two wins in a row with a swift victory over Richard Powell.

Mister Hamme hard at thought

The water restriction didn’t last long after the matches. Mister Trivedi and Mister Hamme had plenty of time to explore the Lansdowne after their quick wins. Once Mister Widdicombe and Doctor Kirby had caught up, we had an excellent dinner.

Other news

Mister Osseiran followed up his draw against Roehampton with a victory as white against Doctor Schady in the Gladstone trophy. Mister Osseiran, Doctor Kirby and Mister Whitely lead with one point each. The run of inter-club matches makes it hard to get time, but try to play your matches.
