NLC in ‘not lose’ shocker

The first fixture of 2016 saw a hard fought 3-3 draw between the NLC and the Roehampton.

Roehampton don’t play in the Hamilton-Russell Cup, but put out a strong team for friendlies and have beaten the Hurlingham and Lansdowne this season.

The games went back and forth. At 9PM Mister Osseiran was ‘encouraged’ to agree a ‘culinary draw’ while two pawns up with a strong attack. He generously agreed to make the match all square. Thank you Mister Osseiran.

Doctor Kirby drew on Board 1 against Nick Greenwood in a Nimzo-Indian (no Caro-Kann!). Despite being a pawn up for most of the game, time trouble and a stubborn opponent led to a three-move repetition.

Doctor Kirby questioning why he didn’t play 7….cxd4

Mister Widdicombe was on board 2 losing as white against Jason Mohr in a Sicilian. Mister Widdicombe made a good combination to get an advantage but castled into his opponent’s Queenside attack.

Doctor Schady lost on Board 3 after getting into time trouble.

Doctor Schady deep in thought

Mister Hamme opened his account for the season with a victory on Board 4.

Well done Mister Hamme!)

Our good friend Mister Taylor (Lansdowne) on Board 5 kept up his 100 per cent record beating Neil Evans.

Mister Taylor brings it home again.)

Mister Osseiran drew on Board 6 against the 94 year old Russell Evans. No greater love hath a man that he lay down half a point for his hungry teammates.

We were led by our non-playing Captain Mister Trivedi.

And of course there was dinner! The Roehampton team enjoyed an excellent NLC meal.
